Differences Between Coaching & Therapy

A potential client recently asked me this question | | What’s the difference between coaching & therapy? This is a common question, and one I had when I first began my journey as a coach. Coaching & therapy are actually similar in several ways. Coaching & therapy both start off with initial sessions where the work gets defined. The techniques and skills coaches and therapists use can also be similar! Both often ask powerful questions and deeply listen to their clients. And both coaches & therapists work with emotions.

There are, however, differences between coaching & therapy that make them distinct.

  • Therapists diagnose and treat; coaches do not.

  • Therapy is focused on healing & understanding; coaching is focused on evolving & manifesting potential.

  • Therapy is insight-oriented; coaching is action- & being-oriented.

  • In therapy, accountability & homework are less common; in coaching, accountability & homework between sessions is a critical part of the overall experience.

  • In therapy, the therapist is the expert and largely defines the treatment plan; in coaching, both coach & client are experts and co-create the space together.

I have experienced both therapy and coaching as a client, and I believe they are both incredible opportunities to support growth and transformation. I’d love to hear other similarities and differences you’ve experienced in the comments!
